Accessibility Statement
DraftVersion 2.0 · Last updated: 2026-10-03
Semestro is a workspace for students: managing courses and course materials, analysing an assignment's brief, and writing an academic work together with Semestro up to a Word or PDF download. We want every student to be able to use the service on their own, including people with disabilities. The adaptations are made in the site's own code, not through a third-party overlay.
The standard and the level of conformance
The site conforms partially to the Israeli Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Regulations (Service Accessibility Adjustments), 2013, and to Israeli Standard IS 5568 part 1 (May 2021), which is based on the WCAG 2.0 guidelines at level AA. The Word and PDF files the site produces conform partially to IS 5568 part 2. The conformance is partial: what has been adapted and what has not are listed below.
What has been adapted on the site
- •A "Skip to main content" link at the start of every page.
- •Every action on the site can be done from the keyboard, with a visible focus mark - including uploading course materials and scrolling the document and the conversation in the writing room.
- •A clear page structure: headings, marked navigation and content regions, and a clear name for most buttons and fields. The exceptions are listed under the known limitations.
- •Most pop-up dialogs receive the focus, close with the Escape key and return the focus to where they were opened from. The exceptions are listed under the known limitations.
- •While Semestro writes, a screen reader gets a short message about the part being written, without every word being read out. Messages such as "The changed answer is not in the work yet" are read out too.
- •On most screens colour is not the only mark of a state: every state also has a word or a symbol. The exceptions are listed under the known limitations.
- •Text contrast at level AA.
- •The site respects the system's "reduce motion" setting.
- •Text can be enlarged to 200% in the browser, and pages reflow on a phone 320 pixels wide.
- •An "Accessibility options" button on every page: larger text, high contrast, highlighted links and reduced motion. The button is an addition and does not replace the adaptations in the code.
- •Automatic sign-out after 30 minutes without activity, with a warning 3 minutes before and the option to stay signed in.
Files the site produces (Word and PDF)
- •The PDF file is tagged for assistive technologies, its language is set to Hebrew, and every part of the work is marked as a heading.
- •The text in the files is real text, not an image, in black on white.
- •In the Word file the headings are not tagged as headings, so a screen reader will not list them. This is a known limitation; an accessible copy of the file can be requested, see "Alternative ways to get the service".
- •The document title inside the PDF is not set, and the Word file has no document title. The downloaded file is named after the assignment.
Known limitations
As of 2026-10-03:
- •On a phone, when navigating with an external keyboard, some buttons receive the focus under the action bar pinned at the bottom of the screen.
- •On some signed-in screens the browser tab title is only "Semestro".
- •The password requirements list at sign-up and the requirement checks on the work review screen: the state (met / not met) is marked by colour and a symbol that are not read out by a screen reader. In the institution window the choice is marked by colour alone.
- •The error for mismatched passwords at sign-up, and the errors when saving the profile or in the delete dialog, are not read out by a screen reader on their own.
- •The delete dialog in the account settings does not trap the focus and does not return it on closing. On the profile page every change button is named "Change", and some fields at sign-up and in the first-run window are named only by the text inside them.
- •In Word files the headings are not tagged as headings, and tables have no header row. The institution's logo on the cover page has no alternative text.
- •The first-run windows for new users (choosing an institution and accepting the terms) are not marked as dialogs for a screen reader.
- •The site has not yet been tested with a screen reader, and has not undergone an external professional accessibility review.
Browsers and assistive technologies
The site was tested in a current version of Chrome, on a computer and on a phone, with keyboard navigation and automated checkers. The site has not yet been tested with a screen reader; such a test will take place before the public launch.
Alternative ways to get the service
- •If part of the site is not accessible to you, contact the accessibility coordinator. We will help you complete the action - for example, upload course materials for you from a file you send by email, or give you the work in another format.
- •To request an accessible copy of a Word or PDF file you downloaded, write to us; we reply within 3 business days.
Accessibility coordinator
- •Semestro's accessibility coordinator
- •Email: accessibility@semestro.co.il
- •There is no telephone line at the moment; contact is by email.
Requests and reports about accessibility
To report a problem or ask for an adjustment, write to the accessibility coordinator by email, or use the "Report this accessibility issue" button on this page (for signed-in users). It helps to say on which page the problem is, what you tried to do, and which browser and assistive technology you use.
We reply within 3 business days. A reported accessibility defect is fixed within a reasonable time, and no later than 60 days from the request.
Exemption
No exemption from accessibility adjustments has been used.
