Privacy Policy
Version 1.1 · Last updated: 2026-10-07
This Privacy Policy explains what data Semestro collects, how it is used, and what rights a user has over their own information.
Information Collected
- •Account and profile details: full name, email address, academic institution, and any writing preferences the user chooses to enter.
- •ID number (optional): collected only if the user chooses to type it in (in the profile or on a work's cover page), and kept only to print it on the cover page of the exported work. It is never sent to the AI provider, to system logs or to any measurement tool. You can delete it at any time: from your profile, and from the cover page of any work it appears on (deleting it from the profile does not delete it from works already created). If a file you upload, such as instructions or a previous work, itself contains an ID number, it is sent as part of that file's content.
- •Academic materials and assignments: files and content the user chooses to upload for use with the service, such as syllabi, slides, lecturer instructions, and assignment files.
- •Usage and security data: technical activity logs (such as action type and timestamp), used to operate, secure, and prevent abuse of the service.
- •Feedback and contact submissions: content the user chooses to send through the "Feedback & Contact" screen, that is the feedback category, an optional 1 to 5 product rating and the free-text message, is stored to respond to problems and improve the service. The answers to the beta questions are stored there too, including whether you intend to submit the work and how much you would pay, to improve the service and its pricing.
How the Information Is Used
The information is used to actually run the service, including analyzing assignments, assisting with writing, storing the user's course materials, and operating the account. Semestro does not sell personal information to third parties.
Processing by Infrastructure and AI Providers
To operate the service, data, including content the user uploads or enters, is sent for processing to the following providers, acting on Semestro's behalf:
- •Supabase: database, user authentication and file storage. Receives account details, uploaded course materials, assignments and drafts, and authentication logs. Data is stored in region eu-central-1 (EU, Frankfurt).
- •Vercel: hosting and serving the site, and technical runtime logs. Receives requests and IP-level technical logs; product content is not deliberately stored there. Production runs in region iad1 (USA).
- •Anthropic: the AI model that analyses the instructions, writes the work and checks it. Through the Anthropic API it receives the assignment instructions, passages of course material, abstracts of sources you chose, the student's answers in the conversation, a previous work you uploaded and the text of the work; and scanned pages as images, to read the text in them. ID numbers, your name on the cover page and the lecturer's declaration form as you filled it are not sent.
- •Web search: when a work also rests on information from the web, such as an organization, a figure, a law or a report, Anthropic searches the web through its search provider and reads the pages it finds, or a link you added. The model writes the search query from the work: its topic and, at times, words from the instructions, the course material or what you wrote in the conversation. Semestro does not add your name, email address or account details to the queries. Web search is on by default for new works; works created earlier as "course materials only" start with it off. You can turn it on or off for each work, and while it is off, nothing is searched on the web.
- •Voyage AI: search indexing of course materials. Receives passages of the course materials you uploaded and the search queries run over them, to find the passages relevant to the work.
- •OpenAlex, Crossref and Semantic Scholar: open academic databases. When a work uses outside sources, they receive search queries built from the work's topic (not your files and not your personal details).
- •Serper: Google Scholar and Hebrew-web search, when this search is in use, for the same purpose and to the same extent: search queries only.
- •Resend: transactional email only (invitation, sign-in, password recovery). Receives the recipient address and the email content.
- •Google: sign-in with a Google account, only for users who choose it. Receives that user's email address and basic profile.
Where Data Is Processed
Data is processed both in the European Union (Supabase) and in the United States (Vercel hosting, the Anthropic API, Voyage AI and the academic search services). Semestro limits what reaches each provider to what is actually needed to provide the service.
Semestro does not control these providers' own terms or data-retention policies and cannot make commitments on their behalf; details are on their sites.
The Course Materials You Upload
Course materials a student uploads, such as syllabi, slides, lecturer instructions and assignment files, are used solely to produce that student's own work. They are never used to train models, never shared with other users and never exposed to them. The user is responsible for having the right to upload the material, and for any personal detail about another person it contains.
Course materials are kept in the course, to serve every work in it, until you delete them, delete the course or delete the account.
An assignment's instruction files are deleted at the work's first export or when the assignment is deleted. What the work still needs in order to revise and check it (the requirements found in the instructions) is kept inside the assignment. When a work is marked submitted it is locked and kept only so that you can download it again. At that moment the writing room conversation is deleted, and for a question set also the text read from the instructions and its data. The work itself is deleted when you delete the assignment or the account.
Deleting an assignment deletes the work, its drafts and the files exported from it; the course materials stay in the course. Deleting a course deletes its materials and its assignments. Deleting the account deletes all of these and the profile.
How Long Data Is Kept
- •Account and profile details: for as long as the account exists.
- •Course materials, assignments and drafts: until the student deletes them, or until the account is deleted. Instruction files: as set out under "The Course Materials You Upload".
- •Activity and security logs: deleted with the account.
- •After an account is deleted, a minimal deletion record is kept: the email address, the versions of the Terms and the Privacy Policy accepted and the join and deletion dates, together with the beta invitation record and the delivery status of the invitation email. They are kept to document the deletion and the consent that was given, with no content from the works.
- •Email delivery records: held by Resend under Resend's own retention policy.
- •When a paid subscription ends, once there is one: the account and the works are kept for 90 days after the subscription ends and then deleted. A reminder is emailed 14 days before the deletion.
Authentication, Storage, and Security
The service runs on established cloud infrastructure that provides user authentication, a secured database, and private file storage. Access to each user's data is restricted to that user alone through database-level permission controls, and is never exposed to other users. Semestro does not publicly disclose internal configuration or security details of the service.
System Logs, Security, and Abuse Prevention
The service keeps limited activity logs for security, troubleshooting, and abuse-prevention purposes. These logs do not include the full content of assignments or files, only technical information and activity events.
User Rights Over Their Data
Every user has the right to view the data held about them, to export it and to delete it. The profile page inside the service has an export button and a delete-account button; both work without contacting us.
What the export includes: a JSON file with your profile details and writing preferences, semesters, courses, assignments (including the answers you gave for each), the records of your course materials and exports, your drafts and their sections, your acceptances of the Terms and the Privacy Policy, and a usage history (operation type, provider, model, success, estimated cost and time) limited to the most recent entries. The original files you uploaded and the documents you exported are not embedded in the file; each carries a temporary download link, valid for 5 minutes from when the export is generated.
What the export does not include: the technical activity and security logs, the email delivery records held by Resend, and messages sent through the feedback screen. For any data not in the export, write to the address below.
For any other request about your data, or if the self-service route does not fit, write to support@semestro.co.il. We commit to replying within 5 business days.
Cookies
Semestro uses strictly necessary cookies only, which sign you in to your account and keep you signed in between pages, and let you sign up. The service cannot be used without them.
We use no advertising cookies, no tracking cookies and no third-party analytics tools, and we share no data with advertisers.
If we ever add a measurement tool that is not strictly necessary, we will ask for your consent first and make refusing as easy as accepting.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated from time to time. A material change to this policy may require the user to re-consent as a condition of continuing to use the service.
